In fact they often have a much better chance of surviving to adulthood if they are left in their own habitat. In most cases these birds are not injured and are not in need of any extra care. “During this time, we receive hundreds of calls from the public who are concerned about a baby bird they have found out of its nest and we have a large influx of baby birds brought into our centres. Some areas of New Zealand have dedicated bird rescue organisations that SPCA partners with and will refer you to. Call your local SPCA or local bird rescue organisation for advice.Fill a hot water bottle with warm water, wrap it in a towel, and place it under the bird. Place the bird in a box and cover the top.Throw a towel or lightweight blanket over the bird.Once you have assessed the situation and you have decided that there is a need to rescue the bird, do so quickly and quietly.It has been caught by a cat even if it seems fine.It is caught in a trap, fishing line, or string. ![]() ![]() It cannot fly (but it is not a nestling or fledgling being coached by nearby parents).Do not ‘bird-nap’ – make sure that the bird really needs help.Take care when handling large birds – watch for beaks and claws.
